As in the previous topic , this is an open forum for Rasins to submit for public view their sugestions as to how camp life coud be improved/modified/added to for maximum ease, comfort and safety . Already small groups have met and disscussed their ideas , NOW is the time to let the larger community know your views on this subject so that informed decisions can be made to guide us to our goal of collective harmony . PLEASE use the resource of this site to make yourself known , ALL sugestions/opinions and especially complaints are welcomed(complaints will lead us to address an unmet need we may not have been aware of) . The sooner that we formulate our ideas, review and discuss them, the sooner action can be taken to meet needs/build stuff and play with each other .

  • Wind Power?

    09/15
Any thoughts about putting a windmill on the mast/crow's nest next year? don't know how viable (or safe..) that might be, but there's been more of that happening in our area recently so thought I'd put it out there....

Tara and I are also tossing around the concept of a bungee chair or couch that would be buildable on site and take very little room to bring or ship and be easy to make (saw a chair in the Nevada Museum of Art made in the 20's that inspired this notion...). More info as this concept evolves!

My "First Burn" was truly an epic, life-altering experience, and big ups to all the Raisins out there that helped make my debut on the Playa a joyful, fun-filled and eye opening time!
    • Right on, Rocky. Delighted to have you and your potential bungee chair, please tell us more about this thang.

I'm curious to hear what info would be found on the viability of wind power. The stuff I've heard (from off-grid friends near the pretty windy summit of the SC mtns who researched a wind turbine, and also from some articles I've read) is that wind power is a little bit of a pain, especially if the wind is inconsistent (which it is in Black Rock Dessert; hefty and impressive, but inconsistent). Maintaining moving parts and anchoring a thing securely for harnessing and/or withstanding gusts and such is just a whole new dimension I'm not sure I would personally want to add, especially when solar is so simple and easy. I think if we dial-in solar, we won't need wind. Besides, I'm pretty sure that Daylon and Brad would be concerned about putting anything else on the nest or mast, espec. something intended to catch wind. It's still an awesome idea, and harnessing that power very much intrigues me. I've been espec. excited to see wind-farming movements popping up in the Northeast, where there is less sun.

And RIGHT ON on your first burn, bro. EPIC and LIFE-ALTERING are the words I love to hear. And check it out: my friends who've been going for 10 plus years straight keep saying that it gets BETTER for them every year....it grows like a freindly Viral Revolution.

Funny, this is ten times the words I spoke to you on the Playa. Ah, well, next time my brotha.

      Love,
      Eli
    • My first reacton to wind power was the same as Eli -- but I did some quick research and see it's been done on the playa before. It will take a lot more research to assess the viability and to determine how much power we can expect but check this out for a start: www.ae-zone.org/Designs/sa...design.html

Rocky, would you be willing to lead the research on wind power on the playa? If you spend some time on burning man websites, google and the like I think you will find a lot. Ultimately we will need to determine which is the most efficient use of money and other resources.

And -- my first burn was pretty epic in of itself. Definitely a profound experience!

      • Sounds like I may have a good winter project ahead...I remember Dalen saying something like " an electric motor also works as a generator" one morning, and keeping it simple (ie: charging batteries for low voltage DC lighting) would be my primary goal. I'll talk with my local electrician and welcome Dalen, Brad & Adam's input too..
        • It has been done , by friends of ours , the group who made both Solaris(solar&wind powered w/sound system) and Abraxis(big gold dragon) Art Cars . They mounted a 36"propeller wind power generating turbine atop a short mast on Solaris to supplement the mid sized photovoltaic array(8 panel) that powered the bumping fatty sound system towed behind on a trailer . Their art cars systems are playa-tested +5 yrs. Maybe we could ask Shane or Bobcat what they have found out . I personally am more inclined towards refining/expanding the existing solar&battery system since most of the components are my property and if I needed them , the cool 5 batteries/Scott's lighting would be in need of charging via eco-groovy means . If we collectively buy even 1 more panel and a charge controler , we would have double the generating capacity and have a simple fall-back system that could meet the current draw of the Blzn Rzn lighting with watts to spare .
I would like to propose that we create a seperate topic thread to discuss power generation and invite everyone to participate and contribute . Please continue with your enthusiasms , wherever they might lead you, I am sure we will all benefit from knowlage shared and action taken .
